Digital Literacy Skills | 21st century Skills Training and Project Based Learning

Hello everybody! Welcome back to my blog :) I'll be sharing my reflections on Week 3 of our training program. This session was very enlightening for me cuz I have learned so many things on a topic which I had not been very familiar with.

In this session, we have learned and discussed about digital literacy, digital safety and copyright & licencing issues. Digital Literacy is an umbrella term that includes ICT and media literacy skills which require digital tool knowledge, critical thinking skills and social engagement. So, a digital literate person is adaptable, creative, confident, collaborative and a critical thinker. We, as teachers, should be aware of our skills and our students' so that we can encourage them to engage in activities. Students use digital tools for fun and entertainment that's why we should guide them to use the tools in a diverse and creative way. It is important to have digital information since teachers should be updated with the new information, flexible to the changing world to get students' attention and should have the evaluative approach. There are some elements of finding and evaluating digital information that are understanding the source and resource, searching and filtering the appropriate information, evaluation of the content, and organization and storage of the knowledge. I have learned that being information literate is crucial for teachers as  they should evaluate the credibility and reliability of the information, should have good research skills, applying to multiple resources, think critically and organize their information. Hence, they will teach those skills to their students. To check the reliability of the information, we can make use of Google CRAAP Evaluation test. CRAAP stands for Currency (timeliness of the information), Relevance (how information fits into our needs), Authority (the sourceof the information), Accuracy (reliability and correctness of the information) and Purpose (the reason why information exists).

Our second issue was digital safety. In this part, we mainly talked about our rights and responsibilities as digital citizens but we mostly focused on cyberbullying in groups. We shared some stories and defined the term cyberbullying which means bullying people on online platforms with abusive words, blackmails and so on. We gave examples from the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and concluded how teachers might play an important role in this process. In case of cyberbullying, we should not reply to the messages and keep evidences, then apply to the right places to investigate this situation. As teachers, we should satisfy the victim with the result, create a safe environment and listen to their problems.

Lastly, we focused on copyright & licencing. I did not know how important those issues were yet now, I know even using an image from google needs permission. Copyright means the owner of the content has the right to decide on how the content is going to be reused and licensing means to get approved as the owner and get all those rights. I also learned about https://creativecommons.org/  which is a website I can create my own licence for my own content.

And here are some other useful websites I learned in this session:

dropbox.com : It is just like other storage applications. You can use this to store and organize your documents. Additionally, you can add larger documents, pictures, videos and you can create to-do-lists by adding a due date and shareyour documents with your friends.

diigo.com/  : You can bookmark and tag web pages. You can highlight any part of the page and add notes.

mendeley.com : It's a free referencing manager connected to the internet. You can search for articles and add them directly to your folder, you can keep your documents organized easily.

zotero.org : It is similar to Mendeley but Mendeley is more useful. It helps you collect, organize, cite and share research.

easybib.com : It is a quick way to create citations and bibliography.

That was all for this week. I'll be posting my reflections for the following weeks so keep in touch with me and HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK!

Zey.
